Fuckabee

Mike Huckabee said: “We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools, should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?” (source)

Fuck you, Mike Huckabee. Fuck you in your ass with a cactus.

What claptrap. The heavily secularized nations of Western Europe have never tolerated God in public schools, not in recent times anyway, and they have nowhere near the homicide rate of the U.S.

    Fuckabee indeed.

  2. Nate Glass says:

Pretty sure Iran has God in their schools.

If there were a god, and he cared about humans, then why do deadly disasters of any kind happen? Must we make the Mennonite assumption that everyone who got shot deserved it?

It’s not appropriate for anyone to be trying to use this to make a policy point. This should be taken as what it is- an insane person, whose beliefs are irrelevant, committing a heinous crime. It’s not about a failure of national policy, it’s a weakness in the technical security of the school… which is not an issue that requires an impassioned, nationwide debate or massive reform, but inspection by security experts and a requirement to keep emotion out of the debate.

It’s certainly appropriate to ask, soberly, what policy change(s) might prevent this from happening again; but crazy killers kill fewer people each year than some causes that are much easier to stop or at least reduce — drunk driving, for one — so the right level of site security is very likely to be zero.

I also doubt that changing the gun laws, in EITHER direction, is likely to make much difference.

The first thing I would look at is, how well does your state do in getting crazy people off the streets? If it’s as bad as California, you might want to raise the budget of the mental health department.

      • No, I think you’re pretty much off the rails there!

Take away ALL gun ownership, and there can’t be mass shootings. Period. Problem solved. It’s actually quite easy.

Now, mass stabbings, that’s another question.

  5. Zack, when I first read “an insane person, whose beliefs are irrelavant” I thought you were talking about Huckabee.

    • Charley says:

@AlphaCentauri @Zack likewise, I thought you were talking about Huckabee until I got to the end of that sentence.

  6. Zack says:

Nah. For full disclosure, I am a fundamentalist christian… but I’m also a libertarian. I understand and acknowledge that my religious beliefs cannot be enshrined into law under the U.S. constitution… and that the same protections that protect the things I disagree with, may very well, and in some places already do, protect the things I cherish.

  7. So remind me again… why, exactly, do schools have to have security in the US, but not anywhere else?
