Perspective

Last night, I had to make a little visit to the emergency room. (BTW, everything is just fine)

You know how the ER goes. My problem was pretty big, so they rushed me right in. Then out. Then in. Test. Wait. Test. Wait.

My wife gets there, and is amazed at how calm I was. Normally, being made to wait around makes my head explode.

The thing is, when I first got there, I had to wait about 15 minutes before they saw me. The ER at this hospital has one door to the pediatric ER and another door to the adult ER.

In those intervening 15 minutes, the doors to the pediatric ER opened up, and a woman from the coroner’s office exited. I don’t need to explain what that means.

Nothing has pissed me off since then. I’m not sure that much could.

    Appropriate title. Very sad however. I must say, it sometimes takes such an event to open our eyes and realise that there is always someone worse off than we are. In this case, it was the unthinkable.

    I was in the ER recently as well. Can’t go into too much detail, but it was to accompany a loved-one. Having someone you care about in an ER definitely lends perspective. They rushed an infant to another hospital while we were there, so there was a double-dose.

    Glad you are ok.

    My moment like yours: I once did a racewalking race and blew out a hamstring. I was bummed; until I realized what the race was raising funds for: it was for a house where parents could stay while their (possibly) terminally ill children were being treated.

    Yeah, after spending a lot of time in NICUs, I found my own store of patience, because *my* kid was going to be fine. I wasn’t so sure about the under-2-pounder a few beds down from us.

    I was in the ER just the other night and ended up having to get my gallbladder out. But even though I was in pain, I could hear people in other rooms crying. Made bee buck up because I realized my problem was solvable and theirs might not be.
