This will have far-reaching consequences over time.

Damn straight. Aside from the chaos it will probably make for those who’ve established dot-com porn names, the REAL menace is the fact that it’s limited just to adult material — which isn’t very well defined. But even if it were limited to hardcore, that’s even worse, because establishing a domain that’s ONLY XXX material gives the government the opportunity at some point, probably in the near future, to require that all hardcore sites give up their .com, .net, etc. sites and migrate to the .xxx domain, thus making it easier for ISPs (which I guarantee will be heavily propagandized by religious/conservative censors) to simply block the domain, preventing even adults from accessing hardcore on the Web.

      My Predictions:

      1. When people are fighting over .com names in trademark / cybersquatting disputes, favor might start to be given to the non-“adult” site, forcing the one with the double penetration to move to .xxx.

      2. There will be claims like monster.com v. monster.xxx, where the former accuses the latter of trademark dilution.

      3. All the kids around the world, as well as all of the people who masturbate in the public libraries, will find out one day that .xxx is automatically blocked on all government computers (except the ones at the SEC).

      4. Eventually search engines will require you to sign into your gmail/bing/yahoo account to search .xxx sites, thereby adding a layer of supervision to extreme perverts.

      5. Internet Access Providers will shape internet traffic away from pr0n if they happen to also be owned by an entertainment company with a strong religious and political bent.

      6. Some default presumption rule will come into play where if your site has adult content, and is .xxx, you are in a safe harbor, while if it has adult content, and is .com, you have to prove a thousand and one things else you are violating some asinine law preventing minors from accessing hardcore pornography.
