Quinella Top Ten List – Top 10 Reasons For Having Sex

I can’t stop laughing at this story.

Researchers at the University of Texas spent five years and their own money studying the reasons that college students engage in sexual activity. (source) Neat idea. I mean, I suppose that I always thought the answer was pretty simple. However, there were some pretty complex reasons given.

Some were “pretty shocking,” [one of the researchers] said, such as “I wanted to give someone else a sexually transmitted disease.” She said she also was surprised that some people said they had sex because “I wanted to get closer to God.” (source)

And the top ten reasons that men and women have sex? Here they are (source)

WOMEN’S TOP TEN

1. I was attracted to the person
2. I wanted to experience physical pleasure
3. It feels good
4. I wanted to show my affection to the person
5. I wanted to express my love for the person
6. I was sexually aroused and wanted the release
7. I was “horny”
8. It’s fun
9. I realized I was in love
10. I was “in the heat of the moment”

I guess that knocks the theory that women only have sex as victims. (Oops! I originally attributed that theory to Catherine MacKinnon and/or Andrea Dworkin, but it looks like I was dead wrong – a victim of an urban legend. Source).

9. I wanted to achieve an orgasm
10. I wanted to please my partner

Why did they put “horny” in “quotes”? (c.f. a fun blog, The “blog” of “unnecessary” quotation marks).

Interesting how number 10 for the males is “I want to please my partner” and that didn’t make it in the top 10 for females.
